Kelly was born in Wakefield, New Zealand, a small town near Nelson. He started off riding BMX but eventually moved on to freeride mountain biking. Kelly had a reputation for sending it and being the most stoked rider on the course. Kelly eventually moved to Queenstown, New Zealand where he lived with his partner Samantha and dog Tui.
Kelly gained worldwide fame during Red Bull Rampage 2013 with his massive 72-foot backflip over a canyon gap. With over 33 million views to date on YouTube his POV footage is the 4th most viewed GoPro video ever, the run also earned Kelly the silver medal that year’s Rampage, as well as Peoples Choice award.
Kelly passed away while riding his bike on Fernhill Loop above Queenstown in February 2016. A charitable trust, The Kelly McGarry Foundation, has been established in his honour to assist in the further development of New Zealand Mountain Biking trails.
